Setting Up Putty and WinSCP

Setting Up Putty and WinSCP

Putty & WinSCP is already installed on our lab computers. If you select the CEECS desktop image you will be able to use these tools from the Start menu. If you wish to use these tools at home follow the instructions provided below.

Putty

Putty is a tool used to security connect to Unix/Linux operating systems remotely. There are no GUIs (Graphical User Interface) available in our environment so you’ll need to learn & love command line. Putty is really easy to install:

Download Putty from:  http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html

Save the putty.exe file to C:\Program Files\PuTTY (This is case sensitive so be sure to type this exactly. Otherwise WinSCP won’t be able to launch putty)

Next you can create a shortcut of putty.exe by right clicking the executable and select Create Shortcut from the drop down menu. Then copy the shortcut anywhere you want. Save it to the desktop, Start menu or quick launch on your task bar.

Tip Windows 7 Users:

Use Windows 7’s pin to Start Menu or pin to Taskbar for easier setup. Please see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Pin-a-program-to-the-taskbar for more details.

WinSCP

WinSCP is a powerful, free, secure ftp application and it also has a nice GUI for Windows.  You’ll be able to connect to servers that support SFTP, SCP and FTP. We use SFTP (WinSCP’s default setting) for most of our Linux servers.

WinSCP allows you to transfer files from your computer to the server or vise versa. Installation is simple. Just follow the instructions from the installation wizard.

Download WinSCP from:  http://winscp.net/eng/download.php

Once installed, you’ll be able to transfer files to and from pluto or lamp assuming you have an account. To connect click on Start >> WinSCP >> WinSCP to launch the program. You should see the following screen below:

To connect use the following settings:

Settings for Pluto

  • Host name: pluto.cse.fau.edu
  • Port number: 22 (This is the default setting)
  • User name: fau\FAUNetID (Must use fau\ + FAUNetID; your FAUNetID is your user name used to sign into MyFAU)
  • Password: ****** (Type the same password used to sign into MyFAU)
  • Private key file: leave blank (This is the default setting)
  • File protocol: SFTP (This is the default setting)
  • Allow SCP fallback: Leave checked (This is the default setting)

Settings for LAMP

  • Host name: lamp.cse.fau.edu
  • Port number: 22 (This is the default setting)
  • User name: FAUNetID (Do not include fau\! Your FAUNetID is your user name used to sign into MyFAU)
  • Password: ******  (The password that was emailed to you for this server. This is NOT your MyFAU password as this sever keeps independent passwords)
  • Private key file: leave blank (This is the default setting)
  • File protocol: SFTP (This is the default setting)
  • Allow SCP fallback: Leave checked (This is the default setting)

Next click Login and WinSCP will attempt to connect to the SFTP server.
